There are numerous State and Local Government Sustainability programs available that offer business ongoing support with regard to sustainability.
Local Government Programs
Parramatta City Council provides a range of sustainability programs for business including:
Two Sustainability Advantage Clusters; one for Corporates and one for Industry. Sustainability Advantage is a program delivered in partnership with the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change and invites businesses to boost their environmental performance, and in doing so aims to reduce risk, lower costs, improve productivity and enhance business reputation.
CitySwitch Green Office is a national tenant energy management program run in partnership between the cities of Sydney, North Sydney, Parramatta, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide and state government agencies. The program works with tenants to improve office energy efficiency through a commitment to achieve and maintain an accredited 4 stars or higher NABERS Energy tenancy rating. NABERS Energy measures and rates a tenancy's actual yearly greenhouse gas emissions using 12 months of energy bills.
Parramatta City Council is proud to provide businesses within the City Centre with a number of sustainable transport options including:
- The Loop shuttle bus a free service covering the four corners of the city, Monday to Saturday, running every 10 minutes.
- The new pocket-sized Transport Access Guide maps out the citys integrated transport system of trains, buses, ferry services, walking and cycling tracks. Pick one up from Councils Admin building, Parramatta Library or the Heritage and Visitor Information Centre.
- The Go Get Car Sharing Scheme gives you the flexibility of using a car at your convenience without the expense of owning one. Find out more at .
Council also holds an annual Business Sustainability Expo each September, with this years expo being held at the Crowne Plaza Parramatta on 23 September.
Fairfield City Council has developed the Sustain 'n' SAVE program to assist businesses reduce resource inefficiencies in the areas of water, energy and waste, to create their own long term environmental performance goals and communicate their vision to customers, supply chains and the local community.
Camden, Campbelltown, Wollondilly and Liverpool Councils in South West Sydney are providing small business with sustainability support through the Symmetry Sustainable Business (SSB) program. SSB is a sustainability enhancement program designed to improve environmental practices of small businesses, whilst providing an innovative accreditation service.
State Government Programs
NSW Sustainability Compacts are built on the concept of partnership. Compacts are voluntary three (3) to five (5) year agreements between the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW and leading Australian companies that operate in New South Wales.
Sydney Water offers a formalised water saving process for business customers who spend more than $70,000 per year on water and related charges. This amount equates to more than 100 kilo litres of water per day. The Every Drop Counts Business Program process incorporates water management into day to day business operations and at a strategic level.
NABERS is a voluntary environmental rating system for office premises. Building owners and managers will be able to report on those aspects of the environmental performance of the building that are in their control, for example landlord energy use (lifts, air conditioning etc), water consumption etc. Building occupants will report on the environmental performance of the aspects of the building that they control (light and power in their tenancy, transport to and from the building etc).
