Parramatta City Council’s ‘Community Care Program’ aims to make Parramatta a healthy and safe place to live, work and play.
The Home Support and Community Services Team supports older people, children and people with disabilities, with the help of 152 volunteers who provide peer support, meals on wheels and seniors’ activities.
There are five Council operated long-day childcare centres at Harris Park, Dundas, Granville, Ermington and Northmead, plus an occasional childcare centre in Westfield Shoppingtown.
Sports and leisure programs are run every school holidays for children aged 5 – 12 years. The Granville Youth and Community Recreation Centre offers a range of programs for young people, including a job help club and weekly drop-in activities.
Council’s Community Capacity Building Team acts as a catalyst for social change, designed to foster resilient and sustainable communities. The idea is to encourage long-term community-driven social change rather than quick fixes. This team also manages Council’s annual community grants program which allocates some $550,000 to local non-profit organisations.
Council works with State government and community organisations to identify opportunities for emergency and longer term housing options for people who are homeless.
Community safety measures include mosquito trapping, needle disposal bins, upgrading street lighting, delivering road safety awareness campaigns, creating a disaster recovery plan and keeping emergency procedures up to date.
