Skate Park Launch and Sports Open Day - Sturt Reserve, Telopea

5th October 2007

Aussie skate superstar Corbin Harris recently visited Telopea for the launch of the new skate park facility at Telopea. Invited by Dundas Area Youth Service (DAYS) and Parramatta City Council, Corbin put on an impressive exhibition of skills and athleticism on the new ramp.

After a couple of warm ups, he was soon vertical above the ramps. Corbin then worked out a neat “exit strategy” that had him soaring way over the rail. The crowd exploded into spontaneous applause. Corbin also distributed over $1000 worth of free skating gear to locals and took the time to coach some young skaters on the finer points.

Over 150 local kids had gathered for the Sports Open Day which was organised by the team at DAYS in partnership with Department of Housing and the Dundas Valley Junior Rugby Club. There were a variety of demonstration sports, BBQ, and activities for kids. Many community organisations were involved and helped out with volunteers, equipment and other support to make a great community day.

DAYS will have more Sports Open Days next year.

The new ramp was officially opened by Deputy Lord Mayor Pierre Esber. The ramp was built by Parramatta City Council, designed in consultation with the local community by the team in Open Space and Recreation and funded in part by a special grant from NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.

Meanwhile, the ramp itself has been informally “badged” as 2117 – the local postcode!
