Bennalong (also known as Bennelong) c. 1764 - 1813 was of the Wangal Aboriginal clan who occupied the southern shore of the Parramatta River from Goat Island to almost Parramatta. He was captured in 1789 by Governor Phillip as part of a plan to learn the language and customs of the local Aboriginal people. He learnt English and was a translator for Governor Phillip who built him a hut at the present site of the Sydney Opera House. He accompanied the governor to England in 1792 to meet King George III, however upon return was increasingly overwhelmed by European culture and eventually died at Kissing Point (Ryde).
