Building Code & Standards
Building Code of Australia (BCA)
The BCA is produced and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) on behalf of the Australian Government and each State and Territory Government.
This document is a uniform set of technical provisions for the design and construction of buildings and other structures throughout Australia. Council uses the BCA as a guide in the assessment of Construction Certificate and other building approval applications. It allows for variations in climate and geological or geographic conditions.
BCA 2006 comes into effect as of 1 May 2006 and will remain current until 30 April 2007. It is produced on a twelve monthly cycle and is available in three formats, namely a web based version, a CD version and a hard bound book version.
It is possible to purchase the Building Code of Australia 2006 on the Australian Building Codes Board website at www.abcb.gov.au. You can also buy electronic subscription for a similiar fee.
Australian Standards
A Standard is a published document which sets out specifications and procedures designed to ensure that a material, product, method or service is fit for its purpose and consistently performs in the way it was intended.
Standards establish a common language which defines quality and establishes safety criteria. Standards and conformance are the keys to ensuring the quality and consistency of physical, chemical and biological measurement throughout Australian society and the economy.
Standards Australia's Building & Utilities division is the largest area of standardisation. Standards Australia has developed a collection of over 7000 Australian Standards® and associated publications, all available in a variety of formats – from the traditional printed book, through to advanced online subscription services.
Australian Standards are sold and distributed worldwide by SAI Global Limited.
