Join Nell Schofield from Channel Nine’s Sunday program in unleashing the Flock on Thursday 6 December in the former Church Street Mall.
Flock was the creative brainchild of Lighting Designer Philip Lethlean who used inspiration from local sources to create this visual masterpiece. Philip, a recipient of the Australia Council for the Arts Creative Fellowship, is responsible for lighting over 200 works globally. One of Philip’s most renowned works includes The River Spectacular for the 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.
Inspired by the eel traps once used on Parramatta River, Flock is a sensational, airborne sculptural work, sliced by lasers and situated centre stage in the redesigned former Church Street Mall between Macquarie and George Streets.
“Public art helps to bring light and beauty into our city’s heart and gives a good reason for us all to pause in our now bustling CBD,” said Parramatta City Lord Mayor Paul Barber.
“Flock was especially designed for this space and reinforces Parramatta’s growth as an arts and cultural destination.”
This Thursday from 8pm, passers by will be treated to non-alcoholic Flocktails and ambient music before the unveiling and lighting of Flock at 8:20pm. Also as part of the official launch, a contemporary performance choreographed especially for this opening by the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College will entertain the crowds.
The unveiling of this public artwork is the final flourish in the successful, award-winning redevelopment of the former Mall. Council recently received two awards from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture for the ingenuity of the work in opening this section of the mall.
“This event is just the start of so many exciting things to come in our creative and dynamic city such as the Sydney Festival, the 20th anniversary celebrations for Riverside Theatres and the vision of the hot air balloons on a dawn horizon for Australia Day,” said Cr Barber.
