A Call-Out for Volunteers in Parramatta

23 May 2008

With more than 800 volunteers working in all facets of Parramatta’s community, Lord Mayor Cr Paul Barber took the opportunity last Sunday to thank those who perform out this important work.

“Without volunteers, Parramatta City Council wouldn’t be able to carry out as much we do to support the community. From Meals on Wheels to bush conservation to home support, volunteers are the life blood of our services and I wanted to show them our appreciation,” the Lord Mayor said.

“ABS statistics tell us that 13.1%, that’s 15,878 of the Parramatta population, carry out voluntary work in the local area. But as people are working harder at their jobs with longer hours, we are finding it increasingly difficult to find volunteers,” the Lord Mayor said at the celebration.

“This percentage however is an incredible proportion of our local population and far higher compared to the average across Western Sydney. There’s something about Parramatta – the people in this City are proud to play a role in helping our local community.”

Over 200 volunteers, guests and VIPs joined the Lord Mayor’s celebration, including Deputy Lord Mayor Pierre Esber, Councillors Lorraine Wearne, Julia Finn and MP’s Laurie Ferguson and Julie Owens.

Parramatta City Council still needs to continue attracting more volunteers to its ranks and the Lord Mayor used the opportunity to put out the call.

“Why don’t you consider joining the many people in Parramatta who work tirelessly to help others enjoy their lives?” he asked.

“Anyone can get involved, no matter what his or her age, abilities or interests. There are so many ways that you can help others, from conservation to caring, sport to home support work, and much more. Even just giving two hours a week can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

The Lord Mayor encourages anyone in the local government area, from Epping to Granville, to consider becoming a volunteer for Parramatta City Council.
