Cycling Gets a Healthy Boost in Parramatta
16 May 2008
Cycleways in Parramatta are set to become a model for future integrated transport systems throughout Australia after the Federal Government committed to delivering a $1.5 million injection in this week’s budget.
“The decision by the Rudd Labor Government to assist in developing accessible and healthy community transport facilities and upgrade the Parramatta Cycleways will be positive news not only for cyclists but families in the Parramatta area,” the Lord Mayor said.
The $1.5 million will go to upgrading the Parramatta to Blacktown cycleway and will link paths, build bridges and manage weeds along the Toongabbie Creek route. The upgrade will go some way to assist Parramatta City Council implement its 2008 Bike Plan which aims to have 5% of the local population riding a bicycle to work by 2021.
“For people who live and work in the Parramatta to Blacktown corridor the upgrade of a key route means there will be a safer and faster alternative to getting to work,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The environmental and health benefits of cycling cannot be underestimated and Council believes that we need to make it an attractive and realistic alternative to other forms of transport,” the Lord Mayor said.
“This generation could be the first for many decades that doesn't live as long as their parents. At a time when Australia has an obesity problem of epidemic proportions, it is vital that simple measures, such as creating safe and accessible cycleways, is made a priority for local councils around the country,” the Lord Mayor said.
The Parramatta to Blacktown cycleway compliments a growing number of safe means for cyclists to commute in and out of the city.
“I must thank the Member for Parramatta, Julie Owens who has fought long and hard on this issue. Ms Owens understands the needs of the people of Parramatta and the needs of Parramatta City Council,” the Lord Mayor said.
Parramatta City Council is currently aiming to have a network of cycleways throughout the local government area and this new funding allocation will compliment the already extensive Parramatta Valley cycleway which reaches to Putney Park and Homebush.
