State Of The City Address by Lord Mayor Of Parramatta, Paul Barber

Friday 29 February 2008

The Sebel Ballroom, Parramatta

Good afternoon and welcome.

First I’d like to acknowledge theBurramattagal clan of the Darag people as the traditional owners of Parramatta

It’s a pleasure to share the stage today with our energetic Federal member for Parramatta, Julie Owens … and this event with the Chamber’s Roman Dechnicz and MP Tanya Gadiel and of course former Lord Mayor, MP David Borger, and other councillors here today.

This is my opportunity to talk directly to you about the state of our city. It’s my chance to share with you – as important stakeholders of Parramatta – a first-hand account of the city's achievements and challenges. This is how I and Parramatta City Council see it.

I hope the information is useful for you and your business.

Having a long range strategy will soon be required of all local governments.

This Council, with its Parramatta Twenty25 Strategy, is one of the first to develop – and set out to achieve – a long term vision for the city.

Our vision is to be a world class city by 2025.

Already our city has the assets required in all great cities:

  • a diverse economy
  • a growing population
  • a strong environmental focus
  • a vibrant cultural sector
  • a multicultural diversity
  • and many rich heritage and natural assets.
