Over 55's Leisure and Learning Service


Parramatta City Council’s Over 55’s Leisure and Learning Service run an extensive range of educational, recreational and social activities throughout the year.

People over 55 years of age living in and outside of the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA) are welcome to join. A nominal annual fee for membership is charged and there is also a small fee per person for class activities.

Fees

Annual membership fees allow you to participate in any of the activities offered at the five different locations.

Once you are a member, and have decided what activities you would like to participate in, our coordinator will work with you regarding schedule times and costs.

Most activities will incur a small class fee, however some are free. Payment for classes must be made by purchasing an Activity Class Card, which includes 10 activities at the price of $3.15 each. Activities and locations

Activities are held across five different locations in the Parramatta LGA. The Coordinator can provide you with information on how to access each centre using public transport.

Bus outings are offered out of all of these locations except Ermington and massage services are available at Parramatta (due to the popularity of these activities bookings are essential). Bus outings may last a full day (up to 7 hours) and massage appointments are in 30 minute sessions.

Centre based activities last from 1-2 hours.

Parramatta

Located at Ground Floor, Council Chambers Building, 2 Civic Place, Parramatta. It is an easy walk from the railway station & is located near the Parramatta Library. Paid parking is available in Civic Place.

Other activities at the Parramatta Centre

The University of the Third Age (U3A) and the Parramatta Senior Citizens also conduct activities at the Over 55’s Leisure and Learning Service.

Parramatta Senior Citizens offer indoor bowling, while the U3A offer educational activities such as colonial history, writing, family tree research and scrabble. Also available for use is the Broadband for Seniors Computer Kiosk which houses two computers available free of charge for searching the internet and emailing.

To participate in their activities you must take up membership with the relevant organisation. The centre coordinators can help you do this.

Granville

Held at the Granville Youth and Community Centre, 3a Memorial Drive, Granville. It is an easy walk from the railway station. Parking is available.

Activities include
  • decorative painting
  • line dancing
  • aqua fitness (run by Granville Swimming Centre)
  • social activities
  • craft (patchwork quilting, jewellery making etc)
  • Men’s Shed (activities specifically for men- socialise, exchange skills and spend time in an environment akin to the backyard shed).

Ermington

Held at the Ermington Community Hall, 10 River Road, Ermington, and can be accessed by public transport. Parking is available.

Activities include
  • Heart Moves exercise classes (with qualified instructors)
  • line dancing at Ermington Community Hall
  • Heart Foundation and Parramatta City Council Walking group at the George Kendall Riverside Park, Ermington
  • line dancing at Dundas Neighbourhood Centre, Sturt Street, Telopea.

Guildford

Held at the Tom Collins meeting room, Railway Terrace, Guildford (next to Guildford Library and railway station). Parking is available.

Activities include
  • weekly social activities
  • weekly self supported group
  • Heart Foundation and Parramatta City Council Walking Group at Duck River Bushland Reserve.

Wentworthville

Activities include
  • Heart Moves exercise classes in partnership with Housing NSW. Available only to members who live in Wentworthville.

Trained volunteers assist staff with the day to day running of the service and run a number of the activities offered. Volunteer roles available include reception, tutoring, office administration and proving community information. For more information on volunteering visit our volunteering page
