Volunteers are essential for Council to operate many of it’s services for people who are older or have a disability. The Home Support and Community Services section includes 200 volunteers across a range of valued roles such as:

  • Neighbour Aid Volunteer - providing companionship and social support to isolated residents
  • Meals On Wheels Volunteer - to deliver meals as the driver or helper on the delivery run
  • Seniors’ Leisure and Learning Centre Volunteer – to help on the reception desk or to run classes if you have a skill in an area or craft
  • Peer Support Volunteer - providing social support to people with a disability

Why volunteer?

People volunteer for a variety of reasons including to:

  • give back to the community

What is volunteering?

Definition of Volunteering – formal volunteering is an activity which takes place through not for profit organisations to be of benefit to the community and the volunteer, be of the volunteers own free will and without coercion, without financial gain and carried out in designated volunteer positions only.

Parramatta City Council offers volunteers orientation, monthly training, volunteer recognition activities and a supportive and caring environment.

Volunteers

The Home Support and Community Services team includes almost 200 volunteers across a range of valued roles such as:

  • Neighbour Aid - Home visiting volunteers provide a weekly or fortnightly visit to an older people for social support.
  • Meals On Wheels - Volunteer drivers and helpers deliver meals to older people in the Parramatta Community each weekday morning.
  • Over 55's Leisure and Learning Centre – Volunteers help on the reception desk during the week or run classes if you have a skill in an area or craft.
  • Peer Support - Volunteers provide social support to people with a disability during recreational activities on Thursday nights and at other events.

What is volunteering?

Definition of Volunteering – formal volunteering is an activity which takes place through not for profit organisations or projects and is undertaken:

  • to be of benefit to the community and the volunteer,
  • be of the volunteers own free will and without coercion,
  • without financial gain and in
  • designated volunteer positions only.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is part of building a caring community. Being a volunteer can be a valuable and enjoyable experience, proving the opportunity to meet people and help others.

One of the best rewards of volunteering is knowing that your efforts is making a different in the lives of another person. For example - you may have made someone smile or laugh for the only time that day or week. Never under estimate the impact of even a small contribution.

Why volunteer with Home Support and Community Services?

As a volunteer in our team you will be supported with orientation, training opportunities and ongoing support and supervision. There are opportunities to mix with other volunteers and attend events throughout the year.

Parramatta City Council recognises that volunteers have the right to claim reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, such as the cost of public transport or petrol costs when using own vehicle.

What Volunteering Opportunities are available?

To find out what volunteering opportunities are currently available please contact the Volunteer Services Project Officer on Ph: 9806 5704 or complete the request form for more information below.

Each volunteering role will have a position description which will outline the specific role responsibilities, time commitment, and skills and attributes required.

Most volunteering roles ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months due to the nature of the role (many based on relationship building) and the training and support given. Time commitment is from as little as 1-2 hours a week.
