  • The ‘kNOw Your Waste and Win’ Bin Tagging project has been developed to encourage residents to recycle correctly and to get recyclables out of their garbage bin. This project is a joint partnership project between Parramatta City Council’s Waste and Sustainability Team and their waste and recycling contractor Cleanaway.
  • Contamination of the recyclables bin in Parramatta is between 10 – 15% and Council is aiming to lower this contamination rate to 5-10% by next June (2012). This project aims to empower residents to utilise their services correctly. Currently, 17% of what residents place in the garbage bin in Parramatta could be recycled through their household recycling service. The emphasis of the project is rewarding residents who do the right thing.
  • Council’s waste and recycling contractor, Cleanaway, has a dedicated Resource Recovery Officer, who will be randomly checking recycling bins every day across the Parramatta City LGA and rewarding residents that do the right thing. Residents should keep an eye out for brightly coloured tags on their bins that display the ‘kNOw Your Waste and Win’ logo.
  • The campaign will commence in December 2011, with Council officers conducting visual inspections of recycle bin contents. If the household has placed the correct items into their recycling bin, they will receive a ‘smiley face’ bin tag. Receiving this tag enables them to go into a monthly draw to win Council provided prizes. If the bin is found to contain contamination such as plastic bags, the household will receive a ‘frown face’ bin tag and the household will be registered in Council’s contamination management program, which may result in the recycling bin being removed if persistent misuse of the service continues.
  • To support the roll out of this program, complimentary activities will be run.  These include: a Christmas Postcard competition across the City; continuing delivery of the ‘kNOw Waste’ Schools Education Program to preschools, primary schools and secondary school students across Parramatta; as well as ‘kNOw waste’ Community Workshops delivered city wide at local libraries and community centres.
  • Residents should start using their recycling services correctly NOW to ensure they get their chance to win!
