Dog Attacks

Rushing at, chasing, harassing, or biting a person or animal, even if no injury has occurred, are all considered under the Companion Animals Act 1998 to be a dog attack. Council considers these occurrences to be very serious and responds to all reported dog attacks as soon as possible.

If you feel you have been the victim of an attack contact Parramatta City Council on 9806-5700 during business hours and ask to speak to an Animal Management Officer. We also offer an after hours emergency service whereby a ranger can respond to a dog attack at any time of the day or night.

If your dog attacks a person or animal Parramatta City Council will conduct a full investigation into the matter. There are very hefty fines that apply to an owner of a dog that has attacked. The maximum penalty that a court can impose for a dog attack is $16,500.00. Furthermore, after the investigation Parramatta City Council may declare the dog to be dangerous. There are strict guidelines that an owner of a dangerous dog must comply with and failure to do so attracts more fines.

To be a responsible dog owner, and avoid possible litigation, restrain your dog properly at home so that it cannot escape and keep it on a lead when you’re out walking.
