Car Sharing
Car sharing is a popular, low-cost, reliable and convenient alternative to car ownership, taxis or car rental. Car share schemes provide a network of vehicles in both on-street and off-street parking spots which can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members book vehicles for short periods of time, from one hour to a few days.
There are a range of levels of memberships, those for occasional, frequent use and business use.
The car is charged at hourly rate with an invoice issued at the end of each month. The driver does not pay for petrol, car maintenance or associated on road costs.
Car-sharing is sometimes called the "missing link" in the package of alternatives to the private vehicle. Members can use public transport, cycling and walking for most of their daily trips, but have access to a car when required.
Car-sharing also complements taxis, which are better suited to one-way trips and provide an option for those who cannot drive, and rental cars which are cheaper for longer journeys.
Members use car-sharing for a range of trips, but rarely for the daily commute to work. The service is most often used when members have things to carry, need a car to get to their destination, or have multiple stops to make. The average number of trips per month is just two.
Families can use this service in instead of a second car or business can reduce pool vehicles. Also a network of shared cars is being established throughout Sydney, Melbourne Adelaide and Perth making car share vehicles available to members in a variety of locations
It is important to distinguish car-sharing from ridesharing or carpooling,. In the United Kingdom, the term "car-sharing" refers to the shared use of vehicles at the same time – known as carpooling or ridesharing. The term car club is used in the UK instead of Car Share.
Car sharing offers the freedom of having a car without the hassles of ownership such as maintenance, insurance and repairs.
How does car sharing work?
- Join up to a car share service. You will need to supply you licence details and answer a few short questions
- You can reserve book cars online or over the phone, for use at any time of day or night.
- You simply collects the car at the booked time from the dedicated parking space, and later returns the car to the same space.
- The cost depends on time and distance, frequency of use, and the rates charged by each operator.
- Costs associated with fuel, vehicle maintenance and insurance are usually included in the operator’s hire fees.
