Traffic and Transport

The Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) is responsible for the control of traffic on all roads in New South Wales. Traffic management on local roads is performed by Council under delegation from the RTA.

Council resurfaces roads, installs traffic lights and traffic calming measures, and works to increase pedestrian accessbility through maintenance and new footpaths and pedestrian facilities. Laid end to end, the road pavements maintained by Council’s Civil Operations Unit would run from Sydney to Coffs Harbour.

In order to better manage parking in the city, Council has introduced paid parking meters and upgraded its multi-storey car parks. Residents’ parking schemes operate in Harris Park, North Parramatta, Granville and Westmead.

To improve transport options for people moving around the city itself, Council is considering a free city shuttlebus and a park-and-ride facility on the outskirts of the city, linked into the city by bus.

The new Parramatta Interchange was opened in February 2006 and new bus routes were introduced, including nine strategic bus corridors.

Council encourages cycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport. It is working with the RTA to implement a network of safe bicycle routes and facilities for commuters and recreational cyclists.
