Greater Western Sydney Economy

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) is one of Australia’s largest, most diverse and fastest growing regional economies.

GWS  continues to increase the State’s economy and has:

  • grown nearly twice as fast as the state average in 2006-07
  • over one third of the Sydney GRP and one fifth (22%) of the NSW Gross State Product (GSP).
  • is fuelled by a labour force of more than 900,000 people from a variety of educational and vocational areas.
  • a population nearing two million people, almost half that of Sydney as a whole.
  • is projected to grow by another 600,000 people by 2031.
  • is home to 1 in 10 Australians, to 240,000 businesses, and 30 percent of the nation’s top 500 companies.

At its heart is Parramatta, a crucial employment centre in Sydney with over 90,000 people working in the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA) as at the 2006 Census.

Parramatta is the economic capital of Greater Western Sydney: a vigorous, growing city, know as Sydney’s ‘second CBD’ and the state’s fastest growing region.

Parramatta is 24km from the Sydney CBD and easily accessible by road, rail and ferry. The newly completed $100 million Transport Interchange brings over 50,000 people into the City on a daily basis, quickly and efficiently (see our ‘Transport Links’ section for more information).

For the 90,000 people who work in the City, Parramatta offers a diverse range of activities. The Parramatta River and the 84 hectare Parramatta Park are within walking distance from the CBD as are some of Australia’s oldest heritage buildings and sites. The City has some of the finest cafes in Sydney and offers a rich shopping experience. Whatever your interest – be it movies, theatre, music or the performing arts – Parramatta is open for business 7 days a week.

Parramatta Economy

Parramatta is considered to be the capital of GWS and is the region’s major business services centre. Centrally located, Parramatta is easily accessible by road, rail and ferry with over 50,000 people coming into the City's CBD on a daily basis.

Key indicators of Parramatta’s flourishing growth can be observed in its economic output which is currently over $14.2 billion, growing employment numbers, and the expansion of commercial floor space. The City's 86,000 strong workforce is projected to grow by 30,000 over the next 25 years across a range of industry sectors.

The City's growing population, low unemployment and a large skilled work force offers a number of distinct advantages for business.
