Business Support
Many social enterprise practitioners seek support with the business-side of the operations. The need for access to quality business mentoring and support was identified early in the development of PCC’s program. In 2007 a three year project was established to deliver the Parramatta Social Enterprise Hub (PSEHub) program (see below – including link to the Business Planning Guide developed) to assist with delivering this to social enterprises across the Parramatta region. With this now complete, a number of new projects have been developed.
Social Enterprises Sydney
In 2009 - drawing on the learnings from the PSEHub program, the GROW report Towards a Social Enterprise Strategy for Greater Sydney, and on a Churchill Fellowship report - PCC began incubating a proposed new social enterprise development body called Social Enterprises Sydney (SES).
The concept business plan for this entity is available here.
Social Enterprises Sydney is a practitioner-led and membership-driven social enterprise that aims to provide specialist services to Sydney’s emerging social enterprise sector and key supporting stakeholders. Through funding received from the NSW Government's Community Builders program, Social Enterprises Sydney Coordinators are currently being recruited for the Western Sydney and Central Coast regions. A membership drive will start shortly.
See www.socialenterprises.com.au for more information.
Business mentoring collaboration with The Westpac Group
Commencing in July 2010 a collaboration with The Westpac Group is providing experienced business mentors to PCC grant funded social enterprises. A careful matching process, brokered by The Westpac Group's Mentoring team and PCC, ensures a strong alignment between the mentor and the mentoree. Mentors make their expertise available for four hours per month over 12 months. This professional development opportunity is receiving a strong response from The Westpac Group's staff and, needless to say, is very welcome to local social enterprises.
Pro Bono Legal Panel project with the National Pro Bono Resource Centre
In partnership with the National Pro Bono Resource CentrePCC has established a pro bono legal panel that is available to all PCC grant funded social enterprises. Commencing in July 2010 the project provides a structured pathway for accessing a range of legal expertise. To date Henry Davis York, Blake Dawson, the Arts Law Centre, Sparke Helmore, Phang Legal and Dooley & Associates are the panel members.
Parramatta Social Enterprise Hub
The Parramatta Social Enterprise Hub (PSEHub) was part of the broader Social Enterprise Hubs program developed by Social Ventures Australia (SVA) in collaboration with government and corporate partners. The mission of the Hubs program is to support the development of employment related social enterprises in a local area.
The three year PSEHub project was established in July 2007 through a partnership with Social Ventures Australia and the Allco Foundation. Each partner contributed funding to the project, as well as providing guidance in setting its strategic direction. The PSEHub program was completed in June 2010. A key resource developed through the program is available here -
Business Planning Guide for social enterprises – Putting the Pieces Together.
At the completion of the PSEHub program in June 2010 an internal project review was undertaken by SVA and the report arising from this is now available -
PSEH Project Review June 2010.
Business Advisory Service Inc (BASI)
BASI provides a range of small business support services, many free of charge, and through discussions with PCC has sought to develop its understanding of social enterprise and how its services can support this new form of business. See www.basi.com.au for information on its services.
Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence
These awards recognise businesses from all over Western Sydney in a range of categories. PCC is a key sponsor of the awards and through this relationship is working to improve understanding of social enterprise as a business model.
We encourage Western-Sydney based social enterprises to nominate for the awards, which run in the final quarter of each year. Information is available from the Parramatta Chamber of Commerce website.
