Council’s bid to get bins smiling

13 Dec 2011

Residents who recycle correctly will be in the running to win prizes as part of Council’s innovative bin-tagging project, ‘Know Your Waste and Win’.

Parramatta City Council in partnership with its waste and recycling contractor, Cleanaway, have invented the program which aims to reduce contamination of the recyclables service and maximise recyclables recovered.

“The Know Your Waste and Win project is about encouraging everyone in our City to recycle correctly. It’s a very simple way of thanking our residents for doing the right thing,” said the Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr Lorraine Wearne.

“If your household bin is randomly selected for a visual inspection, and you have placed the correct items into your recycling bin, you will receive a ‘smiley face’ bin tag,” said Cr Wearne. “This means you have been automatically entered into a monthly draw to win prizes.

“If you have not recycled correctly, your bin will receive a ‘frown face’ bin tag.

Currently, 17% of what residents place in the garbage bin in Parramatta could be recycled through their household recycling service.

“Recycling is such an easy thing to do, and when you get into a routine, recycling becomes a way of life,” said Cr Wearne. “It provides great benefits through the reduction or reuse of waste, so let’s do the right thing and dispose of our waste responsibly.”

Council officers will be randomly selecting household bins to visually inspect. Officers will not be inspecting all bins. Winners will be drawn monthly. Various prizes will be on offer, including movie tickets.
