Parramatta’s free shuttle bus is here to stay
10 Jun 2011
New South Wales Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian has re-affirmed the State Government’s commitment to funding Parramatta’s free City shuttle bus service, a move welcomed by Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid, today.
Parramatta City Council first launched the free ‘Loop’ shuttle service in August 2008 and up until now, had been funded by rate-payers.
“The State Government’s commitment to funding the Parramatta shuttle is a huge win for Parramatta and the 4000 commuters who use this service everyday,” he said.
“With 90,000 people entering this city everyday and even more people projected to come here to work, live and play in the coming years, the funding is great news for commuters and local businesses,” Cr Chedid said.
“I’m pleased the new State Government recognises the importance of providing the necessary infrastructure in Parramatta, home to the sixth biggest CBD in the country,” he added.
Minister Berejiklian, who rode the free shuttle on Thursday, said the decision to fund the service has taken the pressure off Council and freed up $650,000 of ratepayers’ money each year.
“Council can redirect that spending to other vital services because the O’Farrell Government has stepped up to the plate in Parramatta,” she said.
Member for Parramatta Geoff Lee who joined Minister Berejiklian on the shuttle said around two million trips had been made on the service since 2008 and patronage was increasing.
The Parramatta shuttle service runs as a one-way loop connecting locations including Parramatta Station, Prince Alfred Park, Parramatta Stadium, Parramatta Wharf and Riverside Theatre.
The shuttles operate every day from, 7am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm on weekends.
