East Coast Fast Rail

Fast rail is a faster than normal intercity rail service. In New South Wales, the CountryLink intercity trains travel at up to 160kph. In comparison, a typical fast rail train travels at 300kph, with the Chinese fast trains travelling at 350kph. Fast rail trains need long straight flat track to operate at high speeds and will require a new rail route on the East Coast. A fast train from Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne would take around 3 hours. This makes fast rail travel very competitive with air travel and significantly reduces the need to build a second Sydney airport.

Parramatta City Council believes that there are significant benefits to Western Sydney and the surrounding region of a fast rail station at Parramatta which is at the geographical centre of Sydney. The possible alignment of fast rail route within the Sydney Metropolitan region has not yet been identified by either Federal or State Government and the submission below puts forward the argument for a fast rail station at Parramatta.
