Parramatta Town Hall
History
Based in the heart of the “City of Parramatta”, this 2 storey Victorian Free Classical Civic building was built on the site marked out by Governor Phillip for a market in his plan for Parramatta. A market fair was held here in 1813. It was later the site of the annual feast for Aborigines first held by Governor Macquarie which continued from 1816-1830. This Town Hall designed by GA Mansfield and built by Hart and Lavors was begun in 1881 and opened in 1883. The Council Coat of Arms showing Aboriginal spearing eels from the river, appeared over the doorway, and above this was inscribed “Town Hall, CJ Byrnes, Mayor, 1880”. Various additions have been made to accommodate Council, citizens and visitors but the original building is still serving Parramatta as its Town Hall.
