Transport Strategy for Parramatta

Connecting Greater Western Sydney – Transport Strategy

As the major transport hub in Greater Sydney, Parramatta’s transport interchange already connects more than 50,000 people to Parramatta every day. Of these workers, 82% live outside Parramatta with only 20% using public transport to get to work. The NSW 2021 plan has specifically identified the aim to increase this share to 50% by 2016.

With projected population growth figures of 20% and an additional 30,000 jobs expected to be created in the next 20 years, Parramatta is a viable social and economic partner to Sydney’s CBD.

However, alternatives to existing transport solutions and an investment in transport infrastructure for Parramatta is required to meet the needs of a fast-growing population and economic-growth centre, and encourage increased public transport patronage.

Parramatta City Council is proposing major road and transport infrastructure projects that will alleviate pressure on Sydney’s road and rail networks, reduce traffic congestion and create more investment, employment and residential opportunities in Greater Sydney.

These projects include:

Western Sydney Light Rail Network

Parramatta City Council proposes a Western Sydney Light Rail Network to manage the planned growth of Western Sydney and connect people to jobs. The Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Clr Lorraine Wearne and CEO Dr Rob Lang, introduced the proposal during a meeting with NSW Infrastructure Chairman Nick Greiner and CEO Paul Board in November 2011.

A light rail offers a viable, quick to build solution for Western Sydney. It is more reliable than bus transport and cheaper and quicker to implement than heavy rail and can facilitate faster, more regular services.

Western Sydney Regional Ring Road

Eight strategic road corridors converge on Parramatta, entangling cross-regional traffic including freight causing excessive congestion. A Regional Ring Road around Parramatta and Westmead will improve traffic flow in the region and support the continued growth of West Central Sydney.

A series of intersection upgrades along the M4, James Ruse Drive and Cumberland Highway will create a free flowing arterial road and allow traffic to circumnavigate Parramatta and Westmead quickly and efficiently.

East Coast Fast Rail

The Federal Government has completed the first part of a feasibility study into an East Coast Fast Rail network, with Parramatta short-listed as a potential Sydney station. The study reviewed potential routes from Brisbane southwards to Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, as well as the economic viability of such a network.

Building Sydney's fast rail station in Parramatta will provide access to fast, frequent east coast travel for Western Sydney’s growing population. It will connect Parramatta to Liverpool in the south and Hornsby in the north, and connect New South Wales’ two biggest economies in Sydney and Parramatta, with faster links to regional cities such as Newcastle and Canberra.
